Community Supported Agriculture
CSAs can take many forms, but essentially they are community supported farms in which members contribute to farming projects, usually by way of membership fees, in exchange for fresh, local produce. The concept came to the United States from Europe in the 1980s and has taken strongest hold in New England, the Mid-Atlantic region, and various pockets along the West Coast. They are a great way to take advantage of fresh, locally grown fruit, vegetables, herbs, and more while supporting nearby farms. Each one is different, some offer pickup locations in urban areas, some offer only farm-based pick ups. See the list below for local CSAs and find one that is right for you.
Check out the video below for a quick visual of what a CSA is all about.

The Farm at Our House is now accepting CSA applications for the 2015 season. We offer pickups at our farmers markets in Silver Spring, Crystal City, and Annapolis, and an on-farm pickup near Olney. We offer fresh and local certified organic vegetables and berries, plus eggs from pasture raised hens. Our market CSAs are set up as a debit system instead of a box of pre-selected produce. The on-farm pickup is set up in a market style where we aim for plenty of choice as well. As an additional members-only benefit, all of our members are invited to the farm to pick their own free flowers, herbs, and other seasonally abundant crops. Joining a CSA is one of the most important steps you can make to support and preserve local sustainable agriculture. Our farm also provides work readiness for at-risk young men in Maryland’s juvenile justice system. For more information and to sign up go to www.thefarmatourhouse.com.
